The CSCC Special Saloons

+ Modsports series

BARC Formula Saloons 1996-2004

After the sad demise of the popular Thundersaloons Championship at the end of 1995 one new saloon series picked up the baton for such cars and ran with it. Opening its doors aswell to nearly new British Touring cars and DTM tourers the Formula Saloons mixture caught the imagination of fans , top drivers of the day like Pete Stevens , Rod Birley , Brian Chatfield and Ric Wood and also the Motoring press.

Brian Sheridan of Mercury Autoparks was the initial founder and sponsor creating a fairly liberal set of regulations for metal-bodied saloons with engines from the same manufacturer split into 2 classes for up to and over 2500cc. As time went on the regs had to be expanded with the influx of Supertouring cars joining . Its the Class A big bangers that is of most interest in the contex of this website as some of the cars that raced have returned to the tracks with the CSCC Special Saloons series.

New life for the 2 JTM Thundersaloon cars

PART

ONE

ROD BIRLEY - Honda Prelude Cosworth

The replacement for the Mazda and also built by Jim Morgan at JTM Services at a cost of 100k for the 1993 Thundersalon season. Also using Cosworth power , 530bhp. Rod Birley + Richard Piper taking the title from the Stevens Carlton first time out. Birley`s 7 wins in `94 , with co-driver Ian Cantwell retains him the title. Quieter 1995 but 2 wins at Silverstone , the first time the 2 JTM cars had raced against each other.

Like the Mazda the Prelude entered Formula Saloons in `98 in the Invitation class. At least 3 rounds and again the 2 cars` paths crossed. With `Speed Trap UK` sponsorship takes 2 class wins in `99 although Birley is busy racing his Escort in other championships. An outright win at the Brands opener 2000 against the FS Tourers was repeated twice in June 2001 as Birley and the Prelude made occasional but impressive apearences at his home track. Class win in 2002 Brands and as the Class A enjoy an Indian summer in 2003 second overall in the August race .

Car now owned by David Beatty and races in the CSCC Special Saloons.

MIKE WILSON - Mazda RX7 Cosworth

Built by Jim Morgan for 1989 Thundersaloons with a 3.4 GAA engine for Mike Wilson + first Holman Blackburn , then James McAlpine. 8 wins til the end of 1991. Rebuilt for `92 with black `Armour All` livery and Rouse Cosworth . Rod Birley winning 5 races takes him and Wilson to runners-up. Car is retired and the team race with the Prelude until `95 when the RX7 returns to the Invitational class with Wilson + Paul Bailey . Car still on pace as Bailey wins at Snetterton and at least 5 podium finishes betwen the pair. Thundersaloons fold before 1996 season.

Bailey + Wilson join Formula Saloons for 1998 taking at least three 4th places. Car now owned by veteran special saloon exponent Tony Dickinson.
